In the Sunlight: Filipinx Art and the Diaspora

June 10 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

How does one connect their art to their Filipinx identity? In celebration of Filipino Heritage Month, Sliced Mango Collective will hold space and support Filipinx artists in sharing their work with the community. From performance-based to visual art to photography, we want to celebrate all that Filipinx artists have to offer! The first half of this event will formally feature performance-based artists, following the opportunity to mingle with display-based artists and other attendees. We will wrap up the event with a moderated panel with selected featured artists. This event is open to all ages!

We would like to prioritize folks who self-identify as Filipinx (this is of course inclusive of mixed folks), in order to fulfill Sliced Mango Collective’s mandate of creating a safe space for Filipinxs. Please keep this in mind if you do not self-identify as Filipinx and are interested in attending this event (e.g. registering closer to the event to ensure Filipinx folks have first come first serve with ticket registration).

Costs: To help with the costs of the space, refreshments, gifts for artists, and future events for Sliced Mango, admission for this event will be based on a sliding scale. If you are (1) aged 18 or below OR (2) the cost is inaccessible to you, please contact us at slicedmangocollective@gmail.com for a free ticket.

Important notes:

  • COVID-SAFETY: For everyone’s safety, masks are required at this event except at times of eating or drinking. There will be extra masks and sanitizer available. Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell! Tickets can be refunded in this case.
  • FOOD: Refreshments will be available at the event but we encourage folks to bring their own water. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions and/or accessibility needs, and we will do our best to accommodate! All food will have ingredient labels, so please consume at your own discretion.
  • ACCESSIBILITY: The gallery is wheelchair-accessible and there is a gender-neutral washroom on-site. Keep this event scent-free (no heavy perfumes)! For the complete list of Massy Arts Gallery Accessibility, please click here.

Wayfinding: The venue is at the intersection of Carall St. and East Pender St, which is about a 5-10 minutes walk from Stadium-Chinatown Expo Line Station.

Community agreement: We strive to make this event as safe as possible for our attendees. We will not be tolerating any harmful comments or actions in the space. This includes, but is not limited to, remarks that are racist, sexist, classist, homophobic, transphobic, or xenophobic. If this community agreement is broken by anyone, they will be asked to leave the space immediately and we will support those who were affected as best as we can.

Land Acknowledgement: Sliced Mango Collective is based on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. As settler-immigrants whose homeland also continues to be impacted by colonialism/imperialism, it is extremely important for us to 1) understand our privilege here, and 2) to work in solidarity with the diverse Indigenous communities whose land we are living on.

We are grateful to Massy Arts Society for allowing us to host this event in their space! Maraming Salamat!
