Lyric Collapse Edge & Riot

On Monday, June 5th, join Massy Arts Society, Massy Books for a literary reading featuring Angela Peńaredondo, Mercedes Eng, Xiao Yue Shan, and Jane Shi, hosted by Hari Alluri. Authors will read new and selected works that embrace, locate, interrupt and when necessary weaponize the lyric voice. In this reading, writers invite these kinds of lyrical poetics that migrate through the tangled crosshairs of grief, gender injustice, queer dreaming, resistance, and diasporic histories.

Venue & Accessibility
The event will be hosted at the Massy Arts Gallery, at 23 East Pender Street in Chinatown, Vancouver.

Author Bios:
Angela Peñaredondo is a queer Filipinx writer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator. Peñaredondo is the author of nature felt but never apprehended (Noemi Press), All Things Lose Thousands of Times (Inlandia Institute, Winner of Hillary Gravendyk Regional Prize) and the chapbook, Maroon (Jamii Publications). Their work has appeared in The Academy of American Poets, Pleiades Magazine, Michigan Quarterly Review, Southern Humanities Review and elsewhere. They received fellowships from Hedgebrook, Kundiman, and Macondo; and awards from TinHouse, Community of Writers and others. They are an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at California State University San Bernardino. Mercedes Eng is the author of Mercenary English, Prison Industrial Complex Explodes, winner of the BC Poetry Prize, and my yt mama. She teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, organizes the On Edge reading series, and is Shadbolt Fellow at Simon Fraser University. She is dreaming and planting towards abolitionist futures.
Xiao Yue Shan is a poet born in Dongying, China and living on Vancouver Island. The chapbook, How Often I Have Chosen Love, won the Frontier Poetry Chapbook Prize and was published in 2019. The full-length collection, Then Telling Be the Antidote, won the Tupelo Press Berkshire Prize and is forthcoming in 2023. shellyshan.com
Jane Shi is a queer Chinese settler living on the occupied, stolen, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. Her writing has appeared in the Disability Visibility Blog, Briarpatch Magazine, The Offing, and Queer Little Nightmares: An Anthology of Monstrous Fiction and Poetry (Arsenal Pulp Press), among others. She was shortlisted for The Malahat Review’s 2022 Open Season Award for Creative Non-Fiction. She is the winner of The Capilano Review’s 2022 In(ter)ventions in the Archive Contest and the author of the chapbook Leaving Chang’e on Read (Rahila’s Ghost Press, 2022).
(moderator) Hari Alluri (he/him/siya) is a migrant poet of Philippine and South Indian descent who lives, loves, and writes on unceded Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples, and Kwantlen, Katzie and Kwikwetlem lands of Hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking peoples. Siya is author of The Flayed City and chapbook Our Echo of Sudden Mercy and recipient of the Vera Manuel Award for Poetry, among other prizes, grants, fellowships and residencies.
