Opening Reception / 无用功 Futile Efforts by Rebecca Wang 王晨釔

April 27 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm PDT

On Saturday, April 27th at 2pm, join Massy Arts in celebrating, 无用功 Futile Efforts, a window installation by Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist Rebecca Wang 王晨釔. The installation brings together two photographic series: HOLIDAY selfie, and 无用功 Futile Efforts.

Dealing with the relationship between the cultural and the personal, and the idea of lifestyle politics, HOLIDAY selfie portrays partly fictional, partly autobiographical narratives that question the pervasive and compulsory material expressions around holiday celebrations in the age of globalization and social media, both contributing to the homogenization of discourses in the public realm. It reflects on the role of celebration in contemporary social life by exploring the state of ambivalence which stems from the anxiety of the collective holiday profligacy and the comforting familiarity of (cultural) holiday celebration; and from the lack of capability of participation and the resulting isolation.

Thinking of the construction and negotiation of selfhood in a contemporary diasporic context, 无用功 Futile Efforts inquires what it means and what it takes to fully arrive at one’s various roles—whether academic, occupational, or familial—and fulfill their respective responsibilities. It explores the invisible and/or under-acknowledged energy, labour, and costs for individuals in intersectional positions to achieve their goals. In this series, the artist is interested in how the permeating boundaries between the cultural and the personal, the public and the domestic, the conscious and the unconscious, impact one’s sense of self and one’s understanding of what they can accomplish.

About the artist:

Rebecca Wang 王晨釔 is an artist and curator based on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations (Vancouver, Canada) and in her hometown Hangzhou, China. Her multidisciplinary and curatorial practices investigate the absurdity ingrained in the structures that uphold the everyday which is often characterized by capitalist consumer culture. Through nuanced personal, communal, and fictional narratives, she hopes to destabilize the default ways of knowing, perceiving, and existing that disconnect one from their belongings and surroundings. Rebecca holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a BBA from Simon Fraser University. She is a MA candidate in Critical and Curatorial Studies at UBC and works as the Curatorial Assistant at Richmond Art Gallery, a Senior Program facilitator with Carnegie Community Centre, and serves as the Board Secretary at Access Gallery.
