Massy Books is hiring a Massy Voices Intern!
Massy Books has received funding from the Government of Canada to offer a year-long internship to cultivate professional skills for new graduates looking to begin a career in the heritage, arts and cultural sectors.
The Massy Voices Intern will be responsible for developing and building upon the Massy Voices Salon Series, occurring at Massy Arts Society, our community hub dedicated to supporting the practices of Indigenous and over-excluded artists. Our programming is extensive in multiple forms: open talks, debates, book launches, art shows, performances, concerts, fairs, and many others.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable with recording, livestreaming and archiving shows, social media scheduling, copywriting for communication purposes, assisting with event set-up and tear-down. This position is perfect for graduates from a media, film or communications programs, as well broadcasting, visual arts, curatorial practices, or similar. While this internship provides opportunities for growth, previous technical experience is an asset.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
- Documenting of event activities for use in the creation of marketing materials
- Setting up and running A/V equipment for live-stream and recording of live events
- Scheduling and planning social media marketing and ads
- Designing social media posts based on branding guidelines
- Assist in setting up shows and events.
- Assist in recording and archiving of shows in our online archival system.
The Intern will develop skills in:
- Indigenous cultural protocol, cultural safety, and land acknowledgement training
- Relationship building, outreach, and communications with publishers and authors
- Public speaking and hosting events
- Work with staff and Board to develop and enhance contacts within our identified communities.
- Assist in creating strategies for outreach and active community development.
- Coordinate between participating artists/authors and the community to ensure residents’ goals are met.
This job requires flexibility and working some odd hours to accommodate evening events that take place until 8-9pm. An estimated 6-10 hours/week will be dedicated to events while the remaining will be used towards copywriting, social media and digitizing/archiving).
Skills youth will develop during this placement:
Digital skills: Digital technology refers to the skills needed to understand and use digital systems, tools and applications, and to process digital information. At work, people use digital technology skills to input, access, analyze, organize, create and communicate information and ideas using computers, software, point-of-sale equipment, email, podcasts, web applications, smartphones and other digital devices.
Client service: Client Service refers to the ability to communicate efficiently and professionally with clients. At work, client service skills are required to interact with clients on behalf of the employer.
Teamwork: Teamwork refers to the skills needed to interact with other people. At work, people work with others in pairs and in small and large groups to coordinate tasks, share resources, plan, make decisions, negotiate, solve conflicts and complete other activities that involve teamwork.
Communication: Communication refers to the skills needed to exchange thoughts and information with other people. This exchange can happen orally by speaking, listening and using non-verbal cues, such as body language or in writing. At work, people use communication skills to talk to customers, discuss products with suppliers, explain work procedures to co-workers, participate in virtual sales meetings with clients, and other activities that involve verbal or written exchanges.
Leadership: Leadership refers to a number of skills, including communication, relationship building, and the ability to delegate and traits such as honesty. At work, leadership skills are required when working in a team, demonstrating initiative, and taking responsibility for the completion of tasks that require multiple employees.

Pay: Living Wage BC Rate
Start: December 1, 2022 and ending on
Ends: November 30, 2023 (approx.)*
As mandated by the Government of Canada, eligible candidates:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible); again, please note this is mandated by the Government and not a Massy Books policy
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
- are unemployed or underemployed;
- are a college or university graduate; and
- are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.
